Charlie Sheen back in court for child custody hearing

Child custody can be one of the most difficult issues to resolve during a divorce. Both parents will often have the common ground of deeply caring for their children, but many divorcing parents need the assistance of family law attorneys and a judge to resolve the details of child custody arrangements. In our April 15 post, we discussed the child custody agreement between Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller. Although that agreement is still relatively new, a dispute over that agreement was the subject of a recent court hearing.

Prenuptial agreements can protect property in Wisconsin

When people divorce in Wisconsin, their property is divided between them according to Wisconsin's community property law. Wisconsin's community property law starts off with the presumption that all property and debts of the spouses that were acquired during the marriage are equally owned and therefore will be equally divided in the event of a divorce.

Lifetime alimony lost due to Facebook flub

In the past, we have written about the use of Facebook evidence in divorce cases. The use of Facebook evidence to resolve disputed claims in a divorce is becoming increasingly common. A recent divorce case illustrates how impactful Facebook evidence can be.

Abducted girl found in Germany, returned to her father

In December, we wrote about the serious problem of international child abduction by parents. The most common scenario for international child abduction involves a marriage and divorce between citizens of different countries. All too often, one of the parents will attempt to ignore a valid child custody order and take the child to another country. Many left-behind parents have little recourse when this happens. However, a recent story demonstrates how some children are successfully returned to their parents.

Child custody terms reached by Sheen and Mueller

The highly discussed and publicized divorce between television star Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller has finally reached a point of agreement over terms of child custody. They have two two-year-old twin boys, and their custody is based on a highly customized and rigidly structured plan.

Divorce and income taxes in Wisconsin

We are all used to tax day being April 15. But this year, the federal tax day is April 18 because a Washington D.C. holiday will many keep government offices closed on April 15. Even with tax day delayed three days, many of our readers have questions about how divorce can affect their income taxes.

McCourts continue to work on Dodgers divorce settlement

Opening day has come and gone in Milwaukee, as one of the Brewer's National League Rivals begins a new baseball season with its ownership in doubt because of a prolonged divorce. Although many couples struggle to properly divide their assets during a divorce, few need to worry about an asset as valuable as a professional baseball team during the property division settlement proceedings. However, Jamie and Frank McCourt, joint owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers, are doing exactly that as the Dodgers themselves enter a second season without settled ownership.

Supreme Court to address right to an attorney in support cases

This month, the Supreme Court heard both sides of the argument in a case that could have an important impact on Wisconsin child support cases. The case centers on the issue of whether poor parents should be provided an attorney in child support enforcement cases. Proponents of providing parents with attorneys in these cases note that jail time is a real possibility in these hearings, and while attorneys are provided by the state in criminal cases, they are not provided in child support enforcement cases.
